Kelsey’s Story
Hey there! My name is Kelsey Monroe. I have been a hairstylist since 2010 and boy, has it been a wild ride!
I have tried on many different passions within the salon industry. I have worked behind the chair for over 10 yrs, was a traveling artist/educator for Surface Hair, and owned two hair salons. talēm Salon in Olathe, KS and The Velvet Nova in Kansas City, KS.
One magical day in March of 2021, the stars aligned and I met the love of my life, Anna, at a friend’s wedding. There was an instant and undeniable connection between us. I had never felt anything like that in my life, and of course, she was a salon owner too!
Now, we are engaged and live together in KC and Anna made me a mom of 3 incredible children. We became an instant family and I’m the luckiest woman in the world. Flash forward to April 2022 and surprise! We have a 15 year old! Kingsten is our “unofficially” adopted son and a piece of our hearts we didn’t know we were missing. Although he is moving out of state to finish High School, he is a forever family member. <3
Anna and I love working together and have a different kind of vision for what a salon environment should be. After many experiences of discrimination within the salon world of the conservative Midwest, we both really wanted to create a safe space for everyone, specifically our LGBTQ+ community. We left our former salons behind and are excited to create something that our city is lacking.
I specialize in balayage, vivids, short haircuts and curly hair. My favorite part of my job, though, is getting to connect with all different kinds of people every day. I am so happy and thrilled to see how Glitter Pixies can make a difference in our city!
Anna’s Story
Hi there! I am a mom to three beautiful children, Oliver, Juniper and Milo. I have been doing hair for 14 years. I love all things hair! I specialize in blonding, vivids, up dos, extensions, and red hair color.
I started out at Beauty Brands in Olathe, KS. I moved to Solera Salon and Spa in Overland Park, KS to start my own business. While there I made a lot of connections with like minded professionals. I participated in many local fashion shows doing make up and hair. I also have done a lot of freelancing for the fashion industry in Kansas City. In 2018 I moved to Ashley Nelson Studios in downtown Overland Park. In January of 2020 I opened up Sage Colour Studio in downtown OP with a fellow hairdresser friend of mine. We created a comfortable salon that focused on the comforts and amenities of our clientele. We survived the pandemic and our business continued to boom.
In March of 2021 I met Kelsey at a wedding and the rest was history. I was instantly enamored with her. It was a hard, beautiful, life changing transition to leave my “normal” suburban life in Olathe, but I knew I had to do it to be my true authentic and happy self that I feel was missing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of family and ex husband, they have always been my biggest supporters. Kelsey started working with us at Sage and we began to realize that we needed a different environment. Coming out as a couple and realizing that I was apart of the LGBTQ+ community was rewarding but in all honesty was very difficult. My life had flipped upside down. Even though it was what I needed to do, the transition was not easy. We decided we needed a more intimate space where we could be ourselves and help our clientele that was also in the queer community. That is when we created and opened Glitter Pixies.
We have a lovely space at 95th and Antioch in Overland Park. We feature a space in the front much like a living room so our clients and friends can hang out and feel comfortable. I am currently learning about all things social media and have a passion to help small businesses later down the road with their social media accounts. I never want to stop learning and growing. Life is beautiful, even when it gets really hard, there’s always a rainbow on the other side.
